What Is an AI Companion?
An AI companion is a software agent, usually powered by a large language model, designed for ongoing personal conversation rather than task completion. It maintains a consistent persona and memory of past interactions, allowing a relationship-like dynamic to develop over time. AI companions range from friendship and wellness apps to romantic and adult-oriented platforms.
The idea is older than the technology. ELIZA, a 1960s program that mimicked a therapist, already showed that people readily talk to machines as if they were listening. Modern AI companions arrived in the late 2010s, when apps like Replika paired chat interfaces with early neural language models, and took off after 2022 as large language models made conversation genuinely fluent. Under the hood, a companion is a language model wrapped in a persona: a character description, a memory system that stores facts about you and your shared history, and often extras like generated images or a synthesized voice. The model predicts replies that stay in character, which is why a well-built companion feels consistent from one conversation to the next. People use them for very different things — casual company, practicing social skills, journaling out loud, flirting, or full romantic roleplay. That last use is where the market splits. Mainstream apps filter or refuse adult content; a separate category of 18+ platforms, such as Crushi, removes those filters and adds features like character image generation and voice or video calls. The distinction is usually explicit: SFW products advertise wellness and friendship, while NSFW products verify age and market openly to adults.

Are AI companions safe and legal?
Yes — talking to an AI companion is legal for adults in most countries, and adult-oriented platforms are restricted to users 18 and over. Safety mostly comes down to the provider: check how a service handles your data, whether conversations are private, and whether it is transparent that you are talking to an AI. As with any app, avoid sharing sensitive personal or financial information in chat.
Are AI companions free to use?
Most platforms use a freemium model: basic chatting is free, while features like image generation, voice, or unlimited messages sit behind a subscription or credits. On Crushi, for example, you can start chatting with a character for free without entering a card, and pay only if you want more.
If you'd rather see what an AI companion feels like than read about one, you can start a conversation in about a minute.
